Without GPS coverage, navigation in many environments is expensive and presents many challenges. For example, underwater, or underground. Inertial platforms were bulky, expensive and out of reach for many applications.

This can now change with the development of Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and other small consumer electronics devices and manufacturing techniques.

These devices also enable new safety features for terrain vehicles, e.g. warning before rollover or loss of control. We anticipate many pervasive new applications for this enabling technology

We have developed Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) using MEMS components that use less than 0.6 watts of power and have a mass under 50 grams. It can be used for micro and nanosatellite systems as well as UAV, underwater, and automotive applications. Other more sensitive platforms are also in work.
